ECOWAS TO DEVELOP MODALITIES FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS IN MEMBER STATES

ECOWAS is set to develop a mechanism to ensure that member states implement Renewable Energy policies, projects and plans to meet the global target for sustainable energy for all by 2030.

In this regard, THE ECOWAS Centre For Renewable Energy And Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) is developing an investment prospectus that would enable the body jointly mobilise resources with member countries  to implement key renewable energy projects that would lead to the attainment of that set goal.

Mr. Mahama Kappiah, Executive Director of ECREEE disclosed this on Wednesday at a training workshop on renewable energy for selected journalist from eight ECOWAS countries in Dakar, Senegal.

He said: “we are at the development of what we call the investment prospectus, assessing these projects, looking at the costs and bringing them out to mobilise resources to see how best we can get very important energy projects moving in each country and in the region to meet the targets that we have set.”

Mr. Kappiah said that the process would be launched at the end of July, adding that there were consultants working in eight member states and would be done in six months.

He added that the investment prospectus would be supported by the European Union and implementation would begin in ``key countries of interest in the EU energy agenda”.

He urged member countries to promote the beneficial role of renewable energy sources to facilitate socio-economic development of the sub-region.
