High level conference on women's economic empowerment through energy access opens in Freetown

A high level conference on women's economic empowerment through energy access in the countries of the Mano River Union (MRU) opened on Monday, 7th May 2013 in Freetown, Sierra Leone.  The conference, one of the series of activities to mark the 40th anniversary of the signing of the MRU treaty, was attended by Ministers of energy and gender from Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia and Liberia, the four countries of the MRU.

The Government of Sierra Leone, the Mano River Union (MRU), the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the African Development Bank (AfDB)  jointly organized the three day conference on the theme “Women’s Economic Empowerment through Energy Access in the MRU Sub-region.”

Regional Workshop on the West Africa Clean Cooking Alliance (WACCA)

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the ECOWAS Commission, the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Burkina Faso, with the  support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the Austrian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management, the EU Energy Facility, the Global Alliance for Clean Cook Stoves, the Governments of Austria and Spain, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Agency for Environment and Energy Management (ADEME) organized the 1st Regional Stakeholder Workshop of the West African Clean Cooking Alliance, from April 23 – 25, 2013 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

REGIONAL WORKSHOP OF ECOWAS INITIATIVE ON ENERGY SAVING LIGHTING

As part of implementation the ECOWAS policy on energy efficiency, ECREEE and UNEP/GEF/en.lighten organized a workshop on the 22 April 2013 in Ouagadougou, Burkina-Faso to launch the activities of the efficient lighting initiative in West African. This workshop also witnessed the launching the ECOWAS initiative on energy efficiency in buildings in partnership with the Austrian Energy Agency (AEA) and the study on institutional assessment standards and labeling in ECOWAS countries in partnership with Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) of the U.S. department of Energy and Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP).

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the Global Forum for Sustainable Energy (GSFE), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Government of Ghana  jointly organized the High Level Energy Forum on the theme “Paving the Way for Sustainable Energy for All in West Africa through Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency” from the 29–31 October 2012, in Accra, Ghana. 

2nd Technical Committee Meeting of the ECOWAS Observatory for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

ECREEE is organizing the 2nd Technical Committee and National data collection Meeting of the ECOWAS Observatory for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECOWREX), from the 28th to 29th of October in Accra, Ghana. It will be followed by the ECOWAS-GFSE-GEF-UNIDO high level forum scheduled from the 29th to 31th of October, during which the Observatory will be launched.The agenda for the meeting includes:

  • The review of the energy data and indicators of the country profile section
  • Gathering of updates and data from the ECOWAS member states
  • Review the different functionalities of the ECOWAS Observatory
  • Propose other sections of interest for the development of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
  • Presentation of prospective areas of development of the Observatory and collobaration with other partners

2nd Biomass West & Central Africa Congress 2012

2nd Biomass West & Central Africa Congress 2012 is now scheduled to hold in Accra, Ghana from 04th to 05th October 2012. This premier networking and content-driven congress will gather key representatives from both the Regional Government Authorities & Industry stakeholders from forestry, wood pellets, wood chips, agri based biomass and bioenergy power generation.

This congress will address critical issues on new regulatory and legal frameworks to promote biomass & bioenergy in ECOWAS, latest developments in feed-in tariffs and initiatives towards bio-energy policies, Biomass renewables from maize, rice & meal, deployable bioenergy options,  current options in biomass technology, rural electrification and logistics, handling and transportation of bio products will also be discussed. The congress Speakers are drawn from both government and private industry stakeholders from Republic of Ghana, UK, Mali, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Cape Verde, France, D.R. Congo, Nigeria, USA, Finland and Energy Regulators from: Senegal, Gambia, Liberia,Togo, Gabon, Congo, Niger.

ECOWAS Renewable Energy Investment and Business Forum

ECREEE and the African Development Bank (AfDB) jointly organised the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Investment and Business Forum in Dakar, Senegal from the 27th to 28th of September 2012 . The Forum which is the first major milestone under the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Investment and Business Initiative (EREI) brought together over 90 participants from the ECOWAS region, Europe and the USA. Participants include financiers, project promoters, donors and market analysts who were interested in knowing the investment opportunities and potential in renewable energy in the ECOWAS Region.

At the Forum, ECREEE presented a pipeline of 40 renewable energy projects within the ECOWAS Region, covering a  range of RE technologies (photovoltaic, wind, small hydro and biomass) with a total expected capacity of 552 MW valued at an estimated investment cost of 15.000 million EURO. The Forum acted as a communication bridge between promoters of RE projects and financial partners in the ECOWAS Region.

ECREEE Validation Workshop on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policies and Scenarios for West Africa

The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) works towards a voluntary commitment to the Sustainable Energy For All Initiative of the UN Secretary General presented at the Rio+20. In a regional workshop, held from 25 to 27 June 2012 in Dakar, Senegal, the Directors of the ECOWAS Ministries of Energy agreed on the main targets and pillars of a regional renewable energy and energy efficiency policy of ECOWAS. The ECREEE Rio+20 Side Event "Towards Universal Access to Sustainable Energy Services in West Africa" was held on 17 June 2012. The side event brought together the major partners and beneficiaries in the implementation process of the ECOWAS white paper for energy access in peri-urban and rural areas. Participants include high level representatives from ECOWAS, United Nations (UNIDO, UNDP) and the European Union (Austria, Spain, European Commission). Workshop on Financing and Investments in Mitigation Actions in West Africa

The ECOWAS Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), in collaboration with the Africa Caribbean Pacific (ACP) Business Climate Facility (BizClim) are jointly organizing a two-day Regional Workshop on Financing and Investments in Mitigation Actions in West Africa, which will take place in Accra, Ghana from the 4th to 5th of June 2012.  The workshop will be held against the background and experience gained with Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) finance and renewable energy projects’ successes and failures in West Africa and elsewhere. The forum will therefore examine how policies, technologies, financing and capacity related bottlenecks to the development of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMAs) in West African countries can be addressed to increase access to energy as an engine for growth and improve the competitiveness of African economies.
