The ECOWAS Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) in collaboration with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) jointly organized a four-day training workshop on Renewable Energy (RE) Policies, Incentive Schemes and Planning Tools from  the 9th to 12th of April 2012, in Praia, Cape Verde. The workshop helped  reinforce capacities amongst the ECOWAS Member States concerning energy planning and policy to promote renewable energies at the national level. Over 70 participants attended the workshop from the Ministries of Energy and Finance of ECOWAS Member States, National Electricity Regulators, Regional and International Organizations, Bilateral and Multilateral Partners, and Utilities and Rural Electrification Agencies. The outcomes of the workshop include the following:

ECOWAS REGIONAL BIOENERGY FORUM

03/19/2012

ECREEE in cooperation with its partners  from the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) including Brazil, Ghana, the Netherlands, Sweden, USA, UNDP, UNEP, UN FAO, and the UN Foundation, organized a regional bioenergy forum from the 19th – 22rd March 2012 in Bamako, Mali. The forum initiated an international dialogue and peer-to-peer learning to support the ECOWAS Member States in developing their bioenergy strategies, which will help meet their energy needs and create a vibrant and sustainable modern bioenergy sector that promotes economic growth, rural development, and poverty alleviation.  The Forum presented new methods and information developed by GBEP Partners and Observers on assessing the economic, environmental and social benefits and challenges of modern bioenergy.  Special emphasis was given to the means to promote simultaneously food and energy security and the possibility of alleviating the negative health and environmental effects that derive from the use of traditional biomass fuelwood for cooking.

RETScreen Training

RETScreen trainings in fifteen ECOWAS Countries

ECREEE is supporting national trainings on the RETScreen Clean Energy Project Analysis Software in all fifteen ECOWAS countries. The national trainings follow-up on the regional train-the-trainers workshop held by ECREEE from 22 to 26 August 2011 in Kumasi, Ghana.

The national trainings aim at strengthening the local capacities on financial structuring and appraisal of renewable energy and energy efficiency investment projects. The trainings target key stakeholders such as policy makers, banks, project developers, utilities, trainers and researchers. ECREEE RETScreen workshops have usually a length of five days and trained participants have the possibility to do an exam and certification in the use of RETScreen. So far the ECREEE network trained more than 120 stakeholders.
